How Effective Are Self Defense Classes?





Self defense classes usually draw heavily on traditional martial arts but they do not follow any one specific style. Many of the best effective self defense moves are tamed from karate and other forms of traditional fighting, although some are borrowed from less well known fighting styles. Unfortunately, many of the most effective self defense moves are not allowed in most standard martial arts classes due to the possibility of serious injury or even being considered unsportsmanlike. This leaves those who take self-defense classes with a good bit of work to do in order to learn the moves that they will be able to use against their would-be attackers.


One way to prepare for self-defense classes is to take a physical refresher. A two hour class will typically cover a wide variety of topics such as how to avoid an attack, what to do if you are attacked, and what to do if you are able to escape. After this you will spend an entire two hours practicing the movements and techniques taught in the class. If you choose to take a self defense class that covers only the physical aspect of self defense, you should consider buying a couple of months membership cards so that you have time to complete all of the required material in each of the two months.


If you decide to sign up for a self-defense class, you will need to make sure that you are ready to commit yourself to learning self defense techniques. Many people assume that they can learn how to protect themselves at home fairly easily. While it is true that you can likely learn most self defense techniques from books, videos, or by attending classes occasionally, real life is much different than the training provided in most courses. Your assailant may be aware of your environment, your comings and goings, and even your habits. For this reason it can take weeks or even months of active learning before you start to feel comfortable with defending yourself. As long as you are willing to put forth the effort, however, you should be able to learn how to protect yourself quickly and without too much difficulty.


In addition to learning how to defend yourself, self-defense classes will also teach you how to stay safe. Unlike martial arts style courses which focus almost exclusively on striking your opponent, self defense classes teach you how to block, lock, and escape from attacks as well. While you may not feel comfortable with striking your attacker, being able to use a knife or a pepper spray to fend off an attack is invaluable. If you are attacked while on a bike ride, having a jacket or helmet can keep injuries to the back of your neck and legs at bay. Some self-defense instructors want their students to spend hours studying moving targets, but others want their students to spend far more time practicing self defense moves. You will spend far less time in self-defense class if you can work at your own speed, so make sure you pick a class that fits with your own learning style. Classes that allow you to work at your own pace tend to be the most successful, and they also tend to be the longest lasting.


These days, it seems that more people than ever before are learning martial arts or self defense techniques as a way to protect themselves and their families. From mall walkers who worry about mall security to college students who feel safe on their campuses, people are taking self-defense classes in every locale. While many self defense experts still recommend martial arts for personal protection, the number of people learning self defense techniques has increased dramatically.
